Final Fantasy VII Re-Release Is Now Available!
« on: August 16, 2012, 07:59:40 AM »

Link to Kotaku article: http://kotaku.com/5934566/looks-like-the-final-fantasy-vii-re+release-is-out-today-in-europe

I actually own an original Playstation and a copy of this game.  I play it every now and then and I'm a good ways into it but I think I'm going to go ahead and get this PC version in the hopes that the graphics don't make my eyes bleed as much as playing the Playstation version on a 46" HDTV does.

You can get it for 10 bucks now then it goes up to the normal $12 price.  I'll be downloading this when I go home for lunch!

Text from the article:

Final Fantasy VII, once released on PC in the 90s, then accidentally re-released a few weeks ago, has been re-re-released today. At least in Europe.

Update: It's also out in the U.S. today. Here's Square Enix's press release:

In celebration of the Final Fantasy franchise's 25th anniversary, Square Enix is offering Members exclusive access to this classic at a promotional price of $9.99 through September 12. Following the introductory 30 day promotional period, Final Fantasy VII will be available for $11.99 on the Square Enix eStore.

It's currently up on Square Enix's European store for 10 euros. Seems like that will ramp up to 13 euros after the launch sale ends on September 12.

Doesn't look like Square Enix's U.S. store is selling the game yet.

This PC re-release will come with achievements, cloud saves, and a "character booster" that will allow you to pump up your characters' stats.

I've reached out to Square Enix to ask if the game will be out in America today. Will update if I hear back.

(Thanks, paracelus!)

I wish it was available through Steam!

I already own this one for PSone, and have the Downloadable version on my PS3 and PSP.  Soon the Vita will be able to play PSone classics and I'll have it on there too.

Wow! I don't know about the PS3/PSP versions but this new PC release looks AMAZING!  I mean they didn't do anything to dress it up.  No new textures or character models, but just being able to run it in high resolution makes it a whole new game.  I was having a hard time playing it on the PSone.  It just looks like a blob of pixels and there is so much grain to the image.  But this is crystal clear!\

The achievements are a nice touch too and with the character booster I may actually finally get to finish the game (never could beat Sephiroth lol)

Did you have an example of the higher resolution or anything?  I'd love to buy it to experience it all over again, and the improved quality may be enough to push me to get it on this platform.

This was the only game I played when I was a kid.  I had level 99 characters when I finally beat it for the first time.  I couldn't even begin to say how much time I spent on it on my original playstation.  Unfortunately all of that work is on a memory card somewhere that I can't find.  The character booster is awesome if you just want to see the story all over again.

2nd best Final Fantasy game of all time. :)

Here are some screen shots from the Squeenix website.

And here's a screen grab from the game running at 1920 X 1080.

The FMV is still kind of grainy because it's still the compressed video and the rendered backgrounds are a little pixelated but you can see a lot more detail in them.  The biggest difference is in the sharpness of the character models, both in world and ont he battle screens.

I was a big fan of FFX for PS2.  A lot of people think it's blasphemy when there is FFVII and FFVI out there, but that is the one that really sucked me in.  I took every character across every sphere in the sphere grid, had every legendary weapon... did everything there was to do in the game.  Loved the story, loved the combat, loved the puzzles.  It was by far the most immersed into a video game that I've ever been.

lol, that's funny, FFX is one of my favorites too.  I think FFVII is just a little more important in terms of the evolution of the RPG genre and games in general.  I really liked XIII as well.

You know, I never played IX and I've really been wanting to lately.  Maybe I'll try to score a PSone copy on ebay or something.

So, there's a special place in my heart for FFVII since that was the very first PSOne game that I bought (Side note - didn't have a memory card, so I played through the first part of Midgar a few times before being able to save my game...).  However, I also have really fond memories waiting for the release of VIII (my first foray into ordering games online and dealing with tracking numbers) and remember loving the aesthetic of IX.  The fact that X was the first with spoken dialogue and the first PS2 FF definitely earns it a place of prestige.

I've got to say, if we're only looking at games post FFVII I think that VII still wins for best story and gameplay.  Yeah, it's dated, but nostalgia is what keeps me interested.  Also, the VII "universe" is so rich from spin offs that it's hard not to want to revisit the original.

That said, I would definitely pick of IX and play it, Tim.  The characters were class-locked so that you are forced to make decisions about your party based on more strict guidelines.  I happen to like that as opposed to being able to make ANY character into any class (just fits better with the story line IMO).  Also, I really enjoyed the look and feel of the game.  I'll be honest though, don't remember too much of the plot itself.  This is one that I've been meaning to replay for a while...

Your whole post really hit the nail on the head.  I still have a different opinion on the way I would rank them myself but have similar feelings about the games themselves.

FFIX is DEFINITELY worth picking up.  I really enjoyed the characters in the game.  The art style of it is a lot of fun (even if it is a bit childish at times).  The story isn't the best in the series but the characters are really what make the game worth the play through.  It's another one that you can pick up on PSN and play on a PS3, PSP, or even a Vita here in the near future.

FFVIII is the only one of the games that I never gave a fair shot.  I didn't like the way your character looked on the map, I didn't like the start of the story, and couldn't bring myself to keep playing.  I don't know that I ever successfully got out of the first Fire Temple (or whatever they call it).  I think I finished it, saved my game, and then quit for good.

Game looks sweet. I have it on Psone, PS3 from the store and ported it over to the PSP. I also picked up all the FF game out on PSP real cheap as well. I love 7, but to me FF9 is the best. I think FF11 was the worst. I just didnt like the combat system compared to the other FF game. I love me some FF and StarOcean.
It's not any fun unless you can shoot it.
