Does anybody have Skylanders?

Skylanders

I've been thinking about getting this for my son (and let's admit it, myself.)  I'm sure he would love the idea of putting the toys on the stand and having them appear in the game.  What I'm looking for is feedback on how "kid friendly" the game is.

My son is 4-1/2 and pretty good and figuring out and playing games, but he gets freaked out very easily.  So if there are really mean looking bad guys who roar into the screen it's going to scare the bejesus out of him and maybe I should just hold off.

Anyone have any experience with this game?

I have it. My 7 and 5 yo are enthusiastic about the concept to say the least. The spend more time playing just with the figures than they do the game but their time is limited. So yours should also get some mileage out of the toys even if they don't take to the game. ;)

As for playing though I haven't had much luck getting them to play the SP missions. They typically just want to play the versus modes against each other. The controls and combat are not too tough. Younger gamers may need a hand understanding the upgrades and with some of the trickier puzzles. It's generally pretty forgiving though (there are some more challenging bosses in spots) and the Skylanders don't die, they are just "knocked out" until the next mission but you can immediately swap in a new skylander at anytime so just pop a new one on the portal and you can keep playing.

If you do pick it up I would suggest finding at least one skylander from each element to give as well beyond what the starter kit offers. There are zones in each level that can only be accessed by a skylander from a certain element. They aren't required to advance through the level but help a lot to gather the parts and powers for your skylanders. Certain Skylanders also receive a damage bonus for specific sections in a given level.

I'm in the same boat.  I wanted to pick this up as well but wanted to hear first hand from someone else if its something that the kids would really enjoy.  I don't think this is something my daughter would play but I also don't know if my son is at the appropriate age to really enjoy this thing to the fullest.

I should say that my sons preferring the versus mode is not out of character for them. Lego games are the same, they spend the entire time just smashing each other rather than trying to get through the level. So it's certainly not the Skylander SP driving them away. lol

Realized I didn't address your second thing about scary stuff. There is a villain in the game, and even though he is portrayed as goofy, clumsy and generally inept there are instances of him yelling with a "booming voice" that may or may not be an issue. See below..

I would agree with all of Beac's feedback on the game. Another to consider is the figures themselves and how much they can cost you. My son (just turned 9) LOVES this game and is obsessed with acquiring all 32 figures. He has bought quite few with his own money but with that said this can still get quite expensive if you have given to there whims, LOL! We are 3 short of the full base set  :o

My son, HailsTrev, has it and really likes it but he is 14 so of course none of the bosses or gameplay scares him.  Unfortunately, I have not seen it in action so really can't comment on how it would be for a younger child.

lol yep I usually play through "their" games if for no other reason than to unlock things for them in advance since they won't usually play the SP campaigns. Less of a chore depending on the game, but worth it considering the way they like to play. I liked Skylanders. Very much like the Lego games, entertaining even though not a huge challenge.

Thanks for the feedback guys!  Maybe I'll make it a birthday present this November when he turns five.

So a few months back we played around with this in Target and my son really loved it.  I bought it a while back and its been sitting there as a reward for when he started going to the potty when he needs to instead of holding it.  He's made some good progress lately and I let him open it tonight.  We played through the first three chapters and apart from when Kaos first showed up and scared the beejesus out of him he is absolutely crazy about it.  I let him stay up to play one more chapter before bed because he was about to burst into tears when I said it was bed time!

It seems like a pretty fun game we can play together. I'm hoping it will be enough of a motivational factor to keep him going on the potty because he only gets to play for an hour or so each time he gets a poop in the potty lol!

My wife has me on the same plan.  I am also not allowed to make a mess on the seat.

He has a problem with trying to hold it and making skid marks in his underwear.  But with a lot of positive reinforcement and his total love for this new game we are making some serious progress with him going by himself when he needs to.

And this game is pretty cool! lol

It looks like an awesome game, I'd just be afraid of spending too much money on it.  I'm a bit of a collector and I get obsessive over games.  If I ended up enjoying it, I'd be one of those people that had to get every figure and that looks pricey.

Indeed.  We are already finding ourselves in situations where we only have one water Skylander so we can't access certain parts of a level, etc.  Grandma has been instructed; Skylanders for Xmas! :P
