Impressive specs and right up their alley with the way their business model seems to be pointing.  I'd like to see something like this, and wouldn't be surprised if it launched around the same time as the Next Xbox.  Speaking of... There was also an article out there about the specs and pricing of that over the weekend.

Agreed, I saw that other article too but it taken down?  I'd would have liked to read it .

Here you go:

Sounds like an awful lot of features for $299.  Attractive Price point if you ask me.

That cannot be a normal sized tablet.  As you can see on the spec sheet, power input  = 380W!  Check your tablet power consumption; it's probably about 5~10W.

Either MS has the decimal misplaced by 2 digits (3.8W) or this is much bigger hardware and computing power.

My guess is about 12" screen with built in processor, sort of like computers with integrated processor on it.  12" so that it is somewhat portable (!) while having a large computing power and battery life to distance itself from typical tablets.

On the surface it sounds good . . . cannot avoid the pun there . . .

Update:  should say easily "relocatable", instead of "portable".  It is not portable like 3DS or Vita, but relocatable as in unplug and take it on a trip kind of relocatable.  That's my guess anyways and my wish!

I see what you mean GRD.  Thought something similar when I saw the Hard Drive on the thing.  Most tablets don't have a mechanical hard drive like that (that I'm aware of)

Microsoft announced teh Surface tablet. Some cool things...but...they are, like normal...3 years behind Apple and Android devices. The cover doubles as a keyboard, aside from having the typical on screen keyboard.

I agree, they are really behind the whole tablet thing. This does look pretty cool though and has some different things the other tablets don't. It's all gonna come down to the user experience (Windows 8 in this case) to make this successful or not. There is another press conference later this week to announce another product, I'm not sure what that will be be but I'll bet it's a MS branded phone similar to the MS branded tablet. If that's the case it really seems like they are going to build there own MS Echo system similar to what Mac offers.

MS Xbox (done)
MS Surface (done)
MS Phone?
MS TV?
MS Handheld Game Device?
MS Xbox 720?

Thoughts? What do you think the mystery announcement will be?

I gotta say, I am all over this.  And I disagree with the statements that MS is behind on tablets.  This makes the iPad looks like toy.  This is an actual productivity machine; a tablet laptop hybrid.  I can't wait to see more.

Have they announced a price/release date yet? They really needed to say...it is $399.99/$599.99 and available now...they will lose all the buzz if none of this information is released for another 2 months.

Also, they need a killer app store, RIM's playbook was a better tablet than Apple's...Playbook is dead. Android tablets are going good...but Apple is King...can't deny that. It is easy to use, plenty of apps and a decent price point for entry.

MS had better release it at a good price point...and there needs to be all kinds of apps on release...so far all they have shown is Netflix. MS also should get the Xbox marketing team to work on the marketing...again...Apple kills everyone in marketing.

Udder, I agree it is cool tech...but...no one I have ever talked to has wanted a laptop/tablet hybrid...MS still doesn't get that part of it. iPad has beed successful because it is a tablet...not a mini laptop or any of that. It will be over powered as a tablet, and under powered as a laptop. The Zune was a better MP3 player than the iPod...but the Zune is dead.

Good luck MS. Competition is good for the market.

looks like you can use as a tablet also and not use the keyboard. I with my ipad had a keyboard like that and a stand....
