NFL Draft
« on: April 27, 2012, 08:05:30 AM »
Wow...craziness with all the trading going on last night in the NFL Draft. I liked it. With the new collective barganing agreement, teams could freely trade and now worry about forking over HUGE money for 1st round picks.

My team (the Bucs) traded down and drafted safety Mark Barron, passing on Claiborne at 5 to trade down to 7. Some mixed reactions on sports radio about that this morning locally. I REALLY liked the Bucs trading up at the bottom of the first round to draft Doug Martin, the RB out of Boise State.

How did your teams do? What are your thoughts about the draft?

The Draft was OK.  There was one HUGE thing that happened that I couldn't figure out.  The Browns had the 4th overall pick, and the Vikings had the 3rd overall pick.  But the Browns traded picks with the Vikings and gave up 3 other draft picks to do it.  FOR ONE SPOT.  I don't understand this as it's clear that Minnesota wasn't going to take Trent Richardson with that pick.  Minnesota was always going to take Kalil, everyone seemed to know this except for the Browns.  The Vikings REALLY made a great deal for this pick, but whoever is running the draft for the Browns ought to be fired.

My 49ers drafted a WR which most people that I've talked to seem to think came out of left field.  They picked late in the first round and I don't have a problem with the pick.  We're returning our entire Defense this season and Offense is where we need help.  The O-line is looking good (some depth would be nice) and yeah, they picked up some Free Agent WR's, but Randy Moss isn't going to be there long, Crabtree has been a bust so far, and Mario Manningham doesn't seem like a good #1 option so I have no issues with them going for the WR.  It was a good, safe pick.

Neptune, the only explanation for the Browns trading up the one spot was that they were scared ANOTHER team was going to trade up to 3 to get Richardson. Minnesota definitely held the cards and probably listened to a bunch of offers (including my Bucs who would have loved to get Richardson), but the price for the Bucs was probably TOO STEEP to move up 2 spots.

That is exactly what happened.  There was another team that was trying to get ahead of the browns to take Richardson.  The Browns made a better offer to ensure they could get their guy.

Seahawks got who they wanted, another pass rusher opposite Chris Clemons by drafting Bruce Irvin.  Unfortunately he can't stop the run and has off-field issues.  Wish we would have traded the pick because it didn't look like there was a line waiting to draft this guy.   :-\

That makes sense.  I suppose that never crossed my mind.  Now I get it!

Although the Bucs would NEVER admit it now, but I bet it was them looking to trade up to #3 to get Richardson. They ended up trading up at the end of the 1st round to get Doug Martin so I know they were looking at getting a top RB in the draft.

I agree! I feel we need to boost our defense much more but this is a start. And a solid RB that hopefully will benefit us.
