Dark Souls. Anyone going to get this in October?
« on: August 23, 2011, 06:02:16 PM »

This game is a spiritual successor to Demon Souls which I wanted to play but was a PS3 exclusive.  It is a hard-core RPG not for those easily frustrated by deaths.  In fact, death plays prominently into the game's multiplayer features, which are very unique.

When you die you can enter other players games as a ghost.  In this form you can leave messages that other players will find in their games giving hints/or clues for them as to what dangers lie ahead or how to get through a certain challenge.  You can also physically help them in fighting monsters and other tasks although to what extent has not been made fully clear yet.

At any rate, the first game sounded really cool and this one looks to improve upon it.

I think there were a few here at the Q interested in this game.

I haven't decided on this one, yet. I'm hoping for a demo to get a feel for it.
What has mood to do with it? You fight when the necessity arises-no matter the mood! Mood's a thing for cattle or making love or playing the baliset. It's not for fighting.

Prepare to DIE ALOT. lol

The devs said this title will be HARDER than DS.

I am picking it up for PS3. Have Demons Souls and it is one of the BEST games on the PS3. Tough as hell though. No checkpoints...if you die, you lose your souls and must re-start the level and get back to the point you died to pick your souls back up. If you die on the way again, your screwed because the souls are lost forever.

Definitely looking forward to this game.

Definitely thinking about it as I am currently playing Demon's Souls and really enjoying it. As Bud Man 01 says, prepare to die a lot because if Demon's Souls is anything to go by it will be quite hard and unforgiving. However, in spite of this I find that I am actually finding DS to be a lot less frustrating than many other games I have played. There is a learning curve but once you start figuring things out (what powers you should increase, which weapons to use, which levels to play first etc) it becomes a lot easier. It also helps that the enemies do not level up so you can use the earlier levels to 'farm' a lot of souls (the in-game currency) to help level up your character for the more difficult levels/bosses.

It is not your traditional RPG as there is very little interaction with other characters and no obvious quest (apart from kill all the bad guys) but the atmosphere on the various levels is great. In fact, I spent 3 hours last night literally creeping through one of the levels watching out for bad guys at every turn.

My only concern at this point is that the developers have suggested that Dark Souls will be even harder. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, I would not want it to cross that fine line between hard but still enjoyable and 'throw my controller into the wall/this isn't fun anymore'.

Perfect description of Demons Souls marc!

I farm the lower levels for souls and try to upgrade armor/wepons. Some of the upgrades are steep. lol  Like marc said, it will make you think twice about trying to rush through levels, especially seeing all the red markers (notes) that other players leave behind. Oh, and don't forget to touch all the blood stains. They are left in the world by other players who have died and you can watch the animation of them dying.  :)  This game BY FAR is not one you will sit down in 8-10 hours and beat.

Sounds cool in a hardcore kind of way.  I was actuallyof fan of this developer's King's Field games back in the day and they were very difficult as well.  I'll be playing on Xbox, sounds like most of you will be on the PS3  :'(  Oh well.

I think I've decided to hold off until I get Xmas money to get this one.  There are just too many multiplayer games coming out the next few months and to me, its more important to get games with a big multiplayer component closer to release.

I'm still definitely getting it though!  :P

I'm extremely tempted.
85% on the buy side for this one. I'm going to Best Buy tonight to preorder Forza 4 and I'll see if they have any preview content on it.

The Light and Dark Tendencies made Demons Souls awesome. It offers so many ways to play the game. The issue at hand is yes it’s a hard game, but very rewarding for what you accomplish. Dark Souls I’m sure will be just as good if not better than Demons Souls. For anyone thinking you can team up with a buddy the multiplayer aspect is allot different then what you think. You have no way to communicate with anyone so you can not simple have a friend join in your quest. I’m sure since the game is coming to Xbox this time the XBL party chat will not work with your friends.  You can call for help, but you don’t know who will come into the game to assist you or kill you.  The Kings Field, Demons Souls and now Dark Souls are to me what a real D&D game should be. So if you are a true D&D fan do yourself a favor and pick up Dark Souls.

Good point about the co-op coldead. You put down a "Help" blue soul stone. Whoever joins your game is random and they can actually invade your game and kill you, or help you. It is not the traditional party up and run co-op together like most games.
