Title: The State of the Q Address
Post by: Udder Juice on February 07, 2014, 10:38:36 AM
Hello everybody!  I just wanted to take a quick minute and say a few things about how the site is doing and where the site is going.  Some of you may have noticed some subtle changes (nothing too shocking I hope!) and might be wondering what is going on.  Well, this administration prides itself on transparency so I’m going to tell you.

First, you might have noticed the Google ads section on the right-hand side of the site.  I would love to keep the site ad free.  I was going to set up a new amazon affiliate account but amazon does not allow “forum based sites” to participate in that program any longer.  This effectively destroyed the one, fairly non-intrusive way I had to generate revenue for the site.  I have a few things that I am looking at doing like creating a mobile app or mobile version of the site along with a few other ideas that may cost some money.  If I can recoup some costs it would be great.  So I am experimenting with the Google ads.  I’m going to try to find a place and configuration for them that hopefully isn’t too ugly (I’m not really thrilled with the side banner as of right now).  You might see them move around and change size/shape.  I apologize if this detracts from the site at all.

Next, I’ve added a section across the top of the home page called, “Featured Articles.”  This is a permanent parking place for posts that are important enough that new members should have their attention drawn to them and old-timers might want to review as well.  They could be announcements, tips on how to use site features or if someone writes up a good review or opinion piece it might get put there for a while.  The “Recent Topics” sidebar is great but once a topic stops getting replies it slides off the bottom.  This new section at the top provides a place for posts to remain highlighted for longer periods of time.

I might add a similar section specifically for game events.  The “DBBQ Highlights (Events & Reviews)” sidebar on the right is pretty far down on the page and doesn’t get a lot of attention in my opinion.  I’m not sure exactly what I want to do though so you may see things move around a few times over the next few weeks.  I don’t want to change the layout too much or make the site hard to read.  I want it to have a natural flow, so I’ll be playing with these ideas.  Nothing is permanent and they can always be changed or removed if they aren’t serving the intended purpose.

In connection with this I just wanted to remind everyone that you do not have to be an “Event Coordinator” or a moderator or have any special title to organize and post game-night events.  The tools (Events Calendar and post event form) have been provided for everyone to use so they can get their game on.  I will usually post events for games that I actually have but if you have a game that isn’t getting any love, post about it, set up a game night (even if it’s on the same night as another event) and get something going.  If no one signs up at first, keep trying.  It’s just the nature of the beast that people won’t always jump on board the first few times if the night wasn’t right or whatever.  Just keep trying.  The site is as much yours as it is mine.  I am working on a way to push the forum calendar to a Google or Facebook calendar that would be incorporated into the mobile app/site so that our events could be accessed from pretty much anywhere.  This means your events would get more publicity so please post as many events as you like.  Throw crap at the wall and see what sticks!

The current list of “staff members” is really long and has honestly become more of a “veteran member” list.  I will probably be cleaning this up to reflect only people who actually put in a lot of time populating the site with content and will be removing a few people from the “staff” list.  Please don’t get your feelings hurt if you are taken off the list.  I don’t want members to think that only staff can organize events and I think reducing the list to just a few people with specific responsibilities would help clear this up.  If you are worried or would like to discuss, please do so in the moderator forum.

This post got long quickly so I’ll stop there.  I’m looking into other things but I can talk about them later.  This is enough for now.  As always feedback is welcome.  If you have any comments, concerns or anything, please discuss them here.  I hope everyone is getting something fun from the site and hope that we can continue to make it better together!

It looks great to me and the google thing is not intrusive at all.

Thanks for the wonderful work/effort you have put in so far!

Probably no point in having me talking up space as an Event Coordinator. I'm doing almost no game playing these days, and this is peak gaming season for me.

Sorry for the bot attack this morning.  Got that all cleared up now.

Also, I have shifted the Google ads to the top of the page.  I think it looks a lot better than the off-centered one that was on the right side.  I can not for the life of me figure out how to make the stupid scroll bar under the ad go away.  There is plenty of room in the block for the ad so I don't know why it's putting it there.  I will do some more research tonight.

Did you reduce the number of "Recent Topics" on the left side of the page?  It seems smaller to me today.

I'll go ahead and make an exception for this domain on my Ad-Block Plus but just this once!

That happened as a result of the spambots that attacked the site this morning when I deleted their accounts and all their post it reduced the number of recent topics.
